General facts:

Survival Unit is a project from Sundsvall in the northern half of Sweden. It is maintained by Kristian Olsson who has a past in the Dark Ambient project Heid. According to Kristian himself, something went wrong in the final stages of the production after it had left his hands and he says that the soundquality isn't nearly as good as it should have been. This release is limited to 200 copies and may be sold out. Nevertheless, it will probably be reissued soon as a splitt with Tugend.

Review:

Up from the north of Sweden comes this little 3" release of obtuse electronical music courtesy of Kristian Olsson. Listening to this is a rather homogenous journey through harsh soundscapes where chaotic noise reign supreme over all that is order and serenity. One soon finds oneself within the pandemonium crossfire of raucous wavelengths, infusing an emotional stir into the unwary listener.

Despite the fact that Kristian is complaining about the soundquality of this release, I can't really say that this is anything that bothers me. There are facets that could shine brighter, but in general the soundquality is quite ok. I find it troublesome to pin-point any sign of originality in this music however. It sounds much like the usual obtuse Noise / Electronics stuff which have been coming out during the last years without actually introducing anything new whatsoever to genre. If you already have a collection of stuff by Brighter Death Now, Anenzephalia, Whitehouse etc, my guess is that you will find little or nothing at all on this CD which you haven't heard before.

This is the biggest downside I can find in this release. Otherwise it has its moments and definitely works musically establishing atmospheres and such. I guess this is mainly for the die-hard underground fans of the genre, other listener might just as well aim for any of the above mentioned projects or their closest companions. I sense that it is becoming to easy to create this particular form of music, yet where is the shock-value these days?
