General Facts:

Magwheels is a project of David Sullivan and Evebuildingbomb is his first pro-printed full-length album. Prior to it, two limited CD-R's had been released: Lanterns on French Mechanoise Labs and Treatkor on Sacred Sound Noise.

Review:

This is an album built around distorted drones and noise that seems to eminate from actual instruments instead of computers. Magwheels seems to be work with slow moving Noise that mostly rest in the background of the listening picture. It sometimes comes forward but for the most, the sound is quite modest and relaxed, yet always remaining bleak.

The use of distorted electric guitar is plentiful on Evebuildingbomb, yet this instrument is not exactly 'played' in a traditional fashion. It is more the rumbling noise that one can achieve with this instrument that has been chosen here as an ingredient. As far as I can hear, it is often just random guitar plucking that constitute the 'post-rock' description from the press-release of Evebuildingbomb. I have never really been fond of this particular use of guitars. It works in some cases but mostly, I prefer the total absence of guitars in this type of music.

To be honest, I found most of these tracks to be rather boring and dry, at least the first four track left me with little or no affection. I guess the deus ex machina was the title track which is harsher and more tense than the others. I consider this track to be the highlight of this CD. The 6th track succeeds in maintaining my interest with its nice usage of sick, screeching sounds and what may be an accordion but after that, my interest drops more and more.

Evebuildingbomb is very long and monotonous and it has a tendency of falling away from my field of interest. It feels like I have heard this several times before and thus, I found it to be nothing more than an average release.

Five questions to Magwheels

ECTONAUT: Please introduce your project to the Ortus Obscurum readers. For how long have you been doing this and for what reason?

DAVID: I have been doing magwheels since I found a two-track reel to reel machine in someone's trash and made a bunch of loops and some 4-track destruction back in 1994? but that stuff was very different from current Magwheels and there was a lapse of about 6 years where I didn't do any "noise" type stuff. I started doing it again when I was depressed and needed some creative expressive thing to deal with that, it is still a purging but with a little more playfulness in my approach.

ECTONAUT: Tell us something about the tracks on the reviewed release. Did you work with specific methods when you composed them? Is there a concept behind this release or anything else interesting that you think we should know about this release?

DAVID: The idea for the songs on Evebuildingbomb changed some during the making of it. Initially it was going to be a lot darker and angrier, but I guess I eased off from those feelings some in the end. so now there is a blend of light and dark moods. the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th tracks are meant to be taken as a trilogy; (forthesunrise is morning, twosleeptillthree is lazy afternoon and harmfullmoon is nighttime leading to darker moods in the 5th track 'evebuilding bomb')

ECTONAUT: How would you describe your music to completely new listeners? Do you feel that your project belongs to a certain genre? Are there any bands that you think you can relate to soundwise and conceptwise?

DAVID: I hate trying to describe music with words, this music is sometimes very personal, not to say that I don't mind sharing personal things, it's just that I prefer to express these things musically instead of with words. When people ask me this question I usually just explain the music through the process I use to create it, which is mostly guitars, field recordings, and samples from movies and other music processed and edited on the Mac. and I might use words like sound-trackish, noisy, non-musical against the traditional sense of songs and sounds.

ECTONAUT: What is most important in music according to you? How do you define quality music and what are your musical influences?

DAVID: Sincerity is important to me in music, I don't care if something has incredible production and fidelity, if I can hear someone's honest expression of a feeling or musical idea that's what touches me. although it's great when the technical side of a recording comes together with the raw act of expression. It's the same thing with listening to someone perform music live, I'd much rather see someone pouring their heart out on a busted $2 guitar than someone who's technique is amazing but has no soul. Influences come from lots of places, emotions and memories (longing, sadness, joy), but other music that moved me towards Noise are things like my Bloody Valentine, Fred Frith, Arto Lindsay, Bartok, Eno, Bastro, Pere Ubu and more currently Godspeedyoublackemperor and Sigur Ros. this doesn't necessarily mean that my music sounds like these artists.

ECTONAUT: What plans do you have for the future? Are there any new releases planned? Anything else you would like to add?

DAVID: I have another album, called Lovedestroylove which will be released probably late summer 2003 on DoctSect, the label of Cordell Klier. and I'm currently working on a project with Jason Crumer of Aluminum Noise. I also have an idea for a western/desert themed project that may never actually happen, just an idea right now.
