HEXENTANZ: The Sabbath Comes Softly Released by: The Fossil Dungeon Release year: 2002 Format: 7" EP Tracklist: A1: The Sabbath Comes Softly 04:50 Total Length: 11:56 min General Facts: Hexentanz is a collaborative project between members of The Soil Bleeds Black and Psychonaut 75. This release is their debut and it is limited to 500 copies. According the press-release, Hexentanz wants to "express the mythic image of sorcery and witchcraft as it stood in the Middle Ages, steeped in mystery and magic". A full-length album should be in progress. Review: Combining flutes and tribal percussion with theatric Dark Ambient effects, Hexentanz conjures up a retrospective journey into the times of witchcraft and magic. The times when pagan dances were held during an untamed Walpurgisnacht on plague-ridden lands, and bonfires were lit in futile attempts to cleanse mankind of its inherent wolf. Wether or not it was like this during the Dark Ages may of course be argued, yet this somewhat romanticised picture is what is being presented on this release. Having been refining the medieval sound since a couple of years back with The Soil Bleeds Black, the members of this project seems to have no problems conjuring up a medieval atmosphere on this recording. Accompanied by the chilling ambient parts - that I suspect are the work of Michael Ford - the result is an darkly atmospherical piece of quality Neo-Folk music. In the title track and the terminus especially, the music goes from being a minimal backdrop of obscure medieval ambience to an outburst of fiery and raging tribal music. Yet, always true to the mystified origins from where inspirations has been drawn, the music sounds very authentic. I am really looking forward to hear the up-coming Hexentanz full-length album. This EP perfectly served as a taster, now I want more. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Click here to enter the Hexentanz website - Click here to contact Hexentanz |
