THE GREY WOLVES: Blood and Sand Release year: 2002 Format: CD Tracklist: 1: Desert Storm 30:09 General facts: The U.K project The Grey Wolves has released an extensive amount of cassettes and CD-r's during its existence. Originally released on tape, Blood and Sand saw its release shortly after the ending of the last decade's Gulf War. In times of a possible new chapter in the history of the wars in the Middle-East, it could not have been re-released at a more appropriate time. Of course, both tracks have been re-mastered for the new millenium. Review: My first impression of this album was that it wasn't as war tinged as I had expected. The very martial layout on the sleeve made me expect something more dramatic, yet indulging in this CD for a couple of minutes revealed that this wasn't yet another CD of Industrial music, entwined with sampled artillery sounds and high decibel havoc. There are few sampled battle sound on this CD. Instead, it is generally constituted around a minimalistic buzz of assembled metallic samples combined with flapping electronic noise and reverbed transmitter sounds. Vocals are totally absent in favour of giving more space and recognition to the often almost sublime drones and sampled sound. The Grey Wolves have through their high-resolute music created a very atmospheric album that - even though it features some harsher elements - allows the listener to really meditate over these tracks without them becoming to extravagant. The sound is rather homogenous throughout the entire album, almost moving in slow-motion. The concept of Blood and Sand is presented in different angles where small changes bestows each part of this 56 min long journey in sound an identity. This is favourable for in-depth reasons, yet I do not doubt that those who enjoy picturesque music with a lot of dramatic changes will be bored by this. Blood and Sand is recommendable to those who are looking for a different war album than the usual massacres in obtuse sounds or more vocally oriented war anthems. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - Click here to enter The Grey Wolves website - Click here to contact The Grey Wolves |
