DARRIN VERHAGEN: P3 Release year: 1998 Format: 8 cm M-CD Tracklist: 1: Untitled 1 03:34 Total playingtime: 21:46 min General Facts: This is the self-named project of Darrin Verhagen of Shinjuku Thief/Shinjuku Filth/Dorobo records. P3 was released in only 500 copies and it's almost sold out these days. It's described by Dorobo as "Delicate electroacoustic and glitch explorations of shakuhachi textures". Review: Darrin Verhagen is truly a master of sound and while listening to P3, it feels like the tracks have been composed with the uttermost precision and skill, sort of like a musical equivalent to building a cardhouse. P3 lacks clear melodies and rhythms and the sound is very minimal, yet it's so well structured that it feels like any alien sound would more or less ruin the atmosphere which is maintained throughout these 20 minutes. P3 is mainly composed of low glitches and sounds and thus, it isn't exactly the sounds to listen to in one's car. It's the kind of release that is best heard through headphones while you're alone and not stressed. I don't think it necessarily needs a conscious listening but this is totally up to the taste of the individual; I experienced equally good results when having P3 as background music in headphones as when I was really focusing on it. It may not be as varied as Soft Ash but it's an interesting listen that needs to be given a chance in order to function properly. I received the best experience from P3 when I heard it before I went to sleep and when hearing it while I was alone studying chemistry. It feels a bit like it cleans one's mind and after hearing it, one feels very relaxed, like a therapy. I actually fell into a half slumber one time while listening to this little piece of plastic and when I regained consciousness, I was still hearing the sounds in my mind. Imagine my surprise when I saw that the CD had stopped 40 minutes before, now that's a release which effects you. - Click here to read an interview I did with Shinjuku Thief - Click here to contact Darrin Verhagen |
