CORDELL KLIER: Apparitions Release year: 2002 Format: CD Tracklist: 1: Untitled 1 00:29 Total Length: 43:44 min General Facts: Cordell Klier is a very active musician from the USA. Apparitions is his first pro-pressed release under the name 'Cordell Klier' (It should be pointed out that one should separate the project 'Cordell Klier' from the composer Cordell Klier). Before its release, he has only released a couple of CD-R's with this project. Apparitions is not Cordell's first pro-pressed release though. Cordell is also active in several other projects, for example Monstrare, Vedisni and Kreptkrept and many of these have albums out on various labels. A recent interview in Ortus Obscurum revealed that Apparitions is just the first of six albums, due to be released within a year. Check out the interview to find out more. Review: One of the recent items to come out of the Ad Noiseam smelter was the debut disc of Cordell Klier, an American composer who is perhaps more known from Vedisni and Monstrare. The music is mostly composed of cleverly dissected glitches and clicks, built upon a foundation of low drones. The latter mentioned ingredient serve the purpose of adding substance to this music perfectly. The drones and 'clicks' really go hand in hand with each though the emphasis is definitely on the glitchs sounds - the 'apparitions' of this album if you wish. The sound sources for this release have been assembled with uttermost precision and care into a satisfactory unity in quality ambient Noise music. I think Cordell has succeeded very well in avoiding the usual unwanted 'mannerisms' that seem to come with many of the 'glitch' based albums of today. The theme of Apparitions of skilfully maintained throughout the album, though never becoming boring and always introducing new aspects of the soundspectra that is the fundament of Apparitions. Whatever you do, do not listen to Apparitions on some cheap stereo equipment. This definitely has to be heard in a surround stereo environment or through headphones. It is a totally different experience then. Cordell has been playing a lot with the PAN effect and thus, one can really tell the direction where each individual sound is coming from. I usually put this on at night after I have switched of the lights. It is interesting to see how the room itself seems to come to life while Apparitions is on. It feels completely magical at times, sometimes even a bit scary. A parallel may be drawn to the music of one Darrin Verhagen. Sometimes it feels like Apparitions border on works such as Soft Ash and P3 by this talented Australian composer. Still, I do not think Apparitions lack any originality. It definitely stands for itself in today's scene. As the press-release states, Cordell may have been a 'new-comer' in the scene for quite some time now. However, I think it is made clear that this composer do not belong to the fringe of the experimental Noise scene with the release of this splendid album - no way. The future for this unit looks bright indeed. Apparitions is a masterpiece that shouldn't be overlooked. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - Click here to contact Cordell Klier |
