Cordell Klier

Cordell Klier is perhaps most known from Monstrare and Vedisni. Hosting a multitude of different projects, Cordell has proved to be one of the most active musicians at presence with a great number of CD's and CD-R's released as well as more than 10 albums with his various projects, due to be released during the coming year. Some on his own label DOCTSECT while some on labels such as Force of Nature and Flesh Made World. While Monstrare and Vedisni already have albums out on various labels, Cordell's selfnamed project had until recently only been releasing low-budget CD-R's. It was the German label Ad Noiseam that got the honor of breaking this tradition by releasing the splendid Apparitions, the first professional CD by Cordell Klier and a professional CD it surely is. Apparitions is a superb journey through sound, both in psychological way for its ability to alter the state of the listener as well as in a technical way for the precision and complexity in the soundstructures that constitute the music. Read the review in the 'reviews' section to find out more. Now on to the interview which Cordell answered in the beginning of November.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ECTONAUT: Could you please introduce yourself to the Ortus Obscurum readers? Who are you?

CORDELL: I'm terrible with introductions....um...My name is Cordell Klier. I run a small label called DOCTSECT. Currently I have a ton of music projects and release material on a ton of different labels. That pretty much sums me up I'd say.. :)

ECTONAUT: Ad Noiseam recently issued Apparitions, an excellent 44-minute long journey through delicate glitch and click soundscapes. How would you describe this album in your own words? Is this perhaps your most ambitious release to date?

CORDELL: Not sure how to describe it really...,  I guess just a post digital album. I don't want to give my listeners any preconceived notions about the material. So I'll just let people preview the material with their own definitions in mind. ...But as far as ambitious..well.... I have about 12 CDRs that have a similar style or sound to them equal to that of Apparitions, so I wouldn't say that Apparitions is all that ambitious considering this is only my first proCD via my own name. Although, if you've only heard Monstrare,  Vedisni, or Kreptkrept discs then it might seem out of character or something. But this style of music is something I have been exploring for the last couple of years now. Even the later Vedisni material covers some glitchy ground... speaking of Vedisni.. we did a side project with the same members minus jeff and + Stevil called Odd November which sounds similar to Pan Sonic mixed with Hazard. DOCTSECT just released the disc "deadmicrowave" if any one is interested.. ??..,,,,

ECTONAUT: Judging from the selected quotes on the CD, it seems like there’s a concept dealing with 'apparitions' and 'glitches' behind this CD. Could you develop this concept and how it is linked to the music further?

CORDELL: Well alot of my source material came from found sounds, field recordings, and cut ups from my old evp research for my OF project. The concept is simply concerning all subjects that contain the "actuality" of something else unusual occurring around you & behind the scenes. Like a moving shadow, a ghost, a spy, a hidden variable. Something tangible and yet unnoticed. Something needed and yet rarely recognized as having a value.

ECTONAUT: I’m really impressed by the complexity of the sound textures on Apparitions. It makes me suspect that we are dealing with a perfectionist here. Is this true Cordell? Are you a perfectionist?

CORDELL: ...haha... depends upon what you mean by perfection. giggle.. I would say that most of my songs build themselves. So I just let them take control during the construction process. The more input I release into a song the more lost it seems, so I tend to leave my songs unfinished. So I'm not sure if I'm a "REAL" perfectionist in the classic sense of the term.

ECTONAUT: How did you work when Apparitions was conceived?

CORDELL: Alone alot.... sometimes not so alone (if you know what I mean..) ...usually just sitting there naked in front of my equipment and PC for hours.

ECTONAUT: By the Gods, I didn't think you would take the word 'conceive' so literary. Anyway, I had barely picked up Apparitions when I learned that you have five new discs with your self named project coming out in the next months. Do you have any details on these that you could give us? Will they deal with the same glitchy music as on Apparitions?

CORDELL: Fleshmadeword is releasing Blue Devouring. Wide Area Network is releasing the CFR and other related secrets.  DOCTSECT will be releasing "night, onlooking". MIISC will be releasing a 12 inch rendition of "cavern poems"... and as far as the others.... James P Keeler of Wilt and myself are working on an artsy little collaboration together that is pending a release date a side from the Wilt+Monstrare split.. so I don't want to give out to much info on that yet.

ECTONAUT: What’s your own view of glitch music as a genre? Is this the music of the future or is it a genre that is forever destined to remain underground, only to be understood by a few?

CORDELL: I think glitch is pretty old style of music considering how fast genres move these days. So I'm thinking if it was going to rise up and take on the persona of a mainstream attitude it should have already done that by now -  or  - it might come around via it's second wave say 7 years from now... and then who knows what at that point.. I think labels like Mego, 12k, ritornell, and raster-noton have pretty much cornered the market as far as that style is concerned from a mainstream angle. There are earlier underground labels that I think the glitch movement was founded on... but the before mentioned have really taken it to a new level. So if it does become something mainstream these will be the labels to bring it to a wider audience.

ECTONAUT: ‘Cordell Klier’ is just one of many musical projects maintained by yourself. I know Monstrare and Vedisni from your albums Dragonflight Recordings but I understand you are active in several others as well. Could you please give us a briefing on all your projects and why you have decided to separate them from each other?

CORDELL: here's a list of my projects cuz a discography would take up too much room...:

Ahous, Canopy of Stars, Cordell Klier, Evening Death's Reply, Ever, Fractal Spine, Gurdjieff, Helaxqom, I12 , Kreptkrept, Kulifuunum, Kunt, Monstrare, No Human Day, Odd November, Of, Old Hands, O.rder of the W.ild L.ocust, Remember, Sent, Success, the act of principle, under crushing wings, Vedisni

As to why I do so many;  it's because I like to explore my creativity in many very dissimilar genres of music. I don't like the limitations of genere-isation... so for release purposes I just separate the songs into categories that are easily digestible to recording labels and the audience needs. Most people wouldn't understand a disc that was comprised of one old school Black Metal song, then an ultraminimailst/sound/art piece, followed by a noise track, and then a spoken word track. So inevitably they get segregated into different projects. That's the only thing I compromise on with my creativity... project dispersment.

ECTONAUT: This new project of yours isn’t just ‘the solo-project of Cordell Klier’ as one could think due to its name. You also work alone in Monstrare. Is there a special reason to why you have decided to release Apparitions under the banner of your own name? Is this perhaps an indication that this project is going to be your main project in the future?

CORDELL: I think most of my projects are solo projects..giggle... but nope. Monstrare is very separate from my Cordell Klier work stylistically. A whole different projection of thoughts and so forth make up Monstrare. Cordell Klier (it's weird talking about my name like it's a "thing"..giggle) as a project came from the idea that a 'NAME' could carry a sort of presence that a 'BAND NAME' couldn't. I know alot of people in this scene find that it seems pretentious to use your own name for a disc.. or even that it might take away from the universality of a disc.. but I guess I'm not dealing with that same mindset. I think having a project under my own name was the most logical next step way back when. And I’m glad I chose that route too.  Another thing to think about is the fact that I have been releasing Cordell Klier discs long before Vedisni ever got signed two or so years ago. Infact most of my work has been "on the down low" for a great number of years now. So as to the future.. I just try to be as precognitive as I can be about my work and just let my intuition guide me. If that means Cordell Klier is the only projects standing when I turn 40 years of age.. that's cool.

ECTONAUT: Fans of Vedisni may rejoice in the fact that you have three new albums planned with this project in 2003. Could you give us some information on these?

CORDELL: Vedisni have been on hiatus for about 2 years now.. but we have about 6 hours of unreleased material that needs to see the light of day. So Annhilivs, Force of Nature, and NCC recs are all going to release re-additions of old sold out limited additions of DOCTSECT releases a demo or two. Which I'm way excited about them all.

ECTONAUT: I believe Monstrare is also alive and kicking with a new CD due to be out any day now, as well as split-CD’s with Wilt and the Law Rah Collective planned. Any details on this?

CORDELL: The Law-Rah thing is going to occur sometime at the end of 2003 on Force of Nature. The Wilt + Monstrare collaboration/split/thingy is still in the works... that could either be summer time or later depending on the finished product. Also I have collaboration with three other great artists this scene might be interested in.. one with Suspicion Breeds Confidence, and I'm going to be helping on the next Combat Astronomy disc ( which incidentally is gonna be a rock album....), + the Next Navicon Torture Technologies disc too.

ECTONAUT: How do you find time to produce all this albums? Along with the earlier mentioned 'Cordell Klier' albums, this totals 10 new albums in one year and you also told me that you are currently collaborating with 10 different artists on various other projects? Can you really shape a project to its full extent when you are occupied with so many others at the same time? And how do you combine this with whatever you do for a living?

CORDELL: ...LOL... well.. I only have a few close friends that live in my state so free time is never a problem... All I do is music. I have two jobs.. but that doesn't stop me. music is my life.

ECTONAUT: With so many projects, isn’t it an unavoidable fact that some are going to become defunct in the future in order to give more room to the others as they grow? Do you really think you can maintain all of them at once?

CORDELL: Well.. yes & no.. but maintaining isn't really something that I consider when I make music. I haven't done an under crushing wings disc in about 4 years now, but I still consider that project alive and kicking. I'd say the only two defunct projects are evening death's reply ( because that was me and my now recent ex), and of course there is my Helaxqom project ....now defunct because of the problems it brings into my life.... I love making that style of music but I needed to leave that one behind... too many horrible things occur when I work on material for that project...way too many.

ECTONAUT: As you are a very active composer, obtaining information on all your projects on the net take a lot of time. At least this was the impression  I got when I was searching for information prior to this interview. I sort of lack a homepage dealing with all your projects, offering status reports and updates. Any plans of creating one?

CORDELL: Well... that is the one thing that I lack the capabilities in controlling at this moment... every time I get my site together something stops it from being completed or the host dies.. or the domain has problems.. etc... right now Brian Coffee of LS-TTL is gonna host the site.. and it is ready to go.. just need to find time and launch a test of it.. but I do really well with DOCTSECT considering I have no website up there.. crazy.

ECTONAUT: Have you ever received any offers concerning composing music for films or exhibitions etc.? Is this something you could imagine doing for a living?

CORDELL: Funny you should say that.. some "things" are in the works but I don't want to jinx anything by saying anything... but let's put it this way... something pretty cool is in the works... :)

ECTONAUT: Your own label DOCTSECT has been mentioned a couple of times in this interview. Could you give us some information on this label? What have you released so far and what is planned for the future?

CORDELL: I've released about 70 CDRs so far in the last several years. I just signed a bunch of people for pro releases here's a list:

J. frede, brain, Suspicion Breeds Confidence, Luasa Raelon, Goose, Mag Wheels, and maybe a Francisco Lopez disc in the future.. if I can get some more cash together.

ECTONAUT: You recently did a couple of shows with a couple of more established acts from the scene, for example Deutsch Nepal, Genocide Organ and Slogun. I believe you were also supposed to play a show with Death In June but I don’t know if this ever happened. Anyway, was playing live with these acts a positive experience for you? Do you feel that your “glitchier” music found its way to the crowd, who probably expected more Industrial and Harsh Noise that evening due to the presence of the above mentioned acts?

CORDELL: ...LOL.... actually you should ask Leech from Navicon Torture Technologies about those shows - all he did was laugh at me the whole time cuz I was such a lunatic... I kind of sorta used the crowds as a therapy session. In Providence I barely played any music at all.. I just yelled at the crowd for twenty-five minutes. And then in NY I just played the part of an evangelical conspiracy nut. The best part about the NY show was Claus's face when I scream at him from the stage... I think he almost died of laughter.. it was great fun.

ECTONAUT: Any more live shows planned with your projects? Perhaps a visit to Europe?

CORDELL: Nicolas of Ad Noiseam mentioned the possibility of some German shows at some point.. but nothing is planned yet. Honestly I never play out anymore cuz the scene here is almost gone... but I'd like to at some point again.

ECTONAUT: Well Cordell, this is the end. If you feel that anything has been left unsaid, now is the time to say it. Thanks for taking the time and answering my questions

CORDELL: Thanks for the fun interview. And to all my fans a big hello.
