General facts:

This oxymoron is a musical project by a guy named Gay Tedder. In Nights Dream We Are Ghosts is his first CD, described as a 'widely available CD' by the label despite the fact that is actually limited to only 500 copies. Prior to this CD, Cold Electric Fire has relased a CD-R through Sacred Sound.

Review:

In Nights Dream We Are Ghosts starts up with a distant rumbling noise behind screeching metallic sounds. The albums more or less stays true to this sound formula throughout the entire CD. This is minimal, relatively low Dark Ambient built from various fieldrecordings and noises created by a variety of instruments. For example, Cold Electric Fire have in one track combined cymbals and cello with the feedback from a stereo mic and a 'voice mutator postponed into washing machine spin cycle' in order to create a track. Other examples of more or less unorthodox instruments involve a metal lampshade, a chain and the sound emitted by a train.

Though mostly based around drones and field recordings, there are some random appearances by more melodic parts on this CD - for example the piano part in the end of the first track. This piano part isn't there to last though. Soon the music once again descends into a tunnel of drones, low and dark without ever really coming forward.

It's always nice to hear experimentation with odd ambiental sources in Dark Ambient music, as long as they spawn dark atmosphere of course. Cold Electric Fire's bleak soundpattern is rather homogenous - very often suggesting the word 'emptiness' while it is on. Emotionless and bleak this is, yet it must not be left unsaid that this album generate a very claustrophobic atmosphere. I guess the closest emotion to be linked with this music would be 'despair'.

This music isn't groundbreaking though, I have heard it before for sure. It is also monotonous at times. I can't really tell the tracks apart from each other after a couple of listens since they sound pretty similar to each other. I definitely consider the last two tracks to be the highlights of this CD. Nevertheless, I would say that In Nights Dream We Are Ghost is a just above average release. It should appeal to the die hard fans of very bleak and sterile Dark Ambient music that hasn't got enough but it is nothing revolutionary.
