Review:

Caanan performs solemn, slow-paced rock with melancholic vocals and solemn acoustic guitars. Polyphonous guitar arrangments accompanied by the deep vocals constitue the foundation of this music. Songtitles like A Last Lullaby and Prayer for Nothing perfectly reflect the mood of Canaan's music. The music completely lacks hard parts, instead the emphasis seems to have been on creating serene, sombre soundtextures to reflect the melancholic themes of the lyrics.

Canaan's music is skillfully performed, yet this is not the first time I hear Gothic-tinged melancholic guitar music like this. It has been before, several times and listening to this CD brings nothing new to mind. It is a soothing listen however when one is in the right mood. It is nice to hear some intermezzos like Scars when the guitar music is suddenly replaced by Dark Ambient. Not a very usual combination, yet these parts perfectly accentuate the melancholy of this album, adding a touch of emptiness to Caanan's sound. The monklike vocals in Chrome Red Overdose is also a nice and orginal aspect that stands out.

Despite som lack of originality, this album is definitely a quality release, its only flaw being the sometimes too familiar sound. It is very long, totalling 15 tracks so it is a priceworthy CD if you are into this kind of music.
