General facts:

Axone is the musical project of Chris Donovan of Somnambulant Corpse Recordings. Prior to this split-CD with kNOw, Axone has released a 3" MCD named Casus Belli on SCR. Axone has also appeared on The Outsider - An Aural Channelling of H.P Lovecraft compilation, also released by Chris' own label. Information on kNOw remains scarce. As far as I know, this is their debut release.

Review:

This first thing that comes to mind when hearing this CD is that is obvious that Axone is still a Shape-Shifter. The previous releases of this project have presented Harsh Noise, Post Industrial, Dark Ambient. This time, Axone dives headlong into the world of dronebased Dark Ambient, yet without losing the experimental nature of the previous releases.

The first track start with a fluttering sound in front of a distant war-drum. It is first soaring free in empty space, accompanied by nothing but a strange voice. Eventually it is attached to a thick foundation of drones and low choirs that gradually seems to grow thicker and thicker. It sort of feels like one is observing it all from a distance in the beginning, yet before you know it; it is all around you, completely engulfing you. Then suddenly, it disappears, giving room to a slowly soaring drone, venturing up and down, almost bestowing sea-sickness upon the listener.

The second track seem to be centred around a sampled speech by some pro-Christian moron. It is rather amusing to hear, though I can't help clenching my fists while hearing this pathetic bible garbage. The track itself is rather minimal, mostly concentrating on creating an atmosphere to support the horrible speech. It actually reminds a lot of Megaptera, meaning that it has certainly been done before. It is not as good as the first track, though it isn't bad.

It is obvious that Axone has evolved a lot since Casus Belli. Especially the first track speaks for this.

When it comes to kNOw, the music is mainly very dry, post industrial/Dark Ambient with machine sounds and elements of harsh Noise. However, the opening track is sort of the true exception from this description. Its structure is built of lurching orchestral blasts, high soundglitches and a electric piano melody, all combined in a most manic fashion . It is later replaced by a dose of harsh noise that feels like sandpaper towards one's ears. It sure has some originality, yet I'm can't say that I'm very fond of the music itself in this track. The other tracks land kNOw somewhere just around average on my scale. The terminus of this journey is a heavy drone piece and I am once again tempted to make a comparison to Megaptera.
