ACHERONTIA STYX: Xenomorph Release year: 2002 Format: MCD Tracklist: 1: Xenomorph 09:50 Total Length: 29:34 min General Facts: Acherontia Styx is the project of Diego Grossi, an Italian who have produced three releases since the project was established in 1999, Xenomorph being the second latest. Acherontia Styx seems to be fond of releasing their stuff in small quantites; Xenomorph was released in only 66 copies in special packaging. Later the same year, a new album named Changing Perspectives We Walk Beyond arrived, limited to only 150 copies. Review: The music of this Italian act is situated in the Dark Ambient field, yet this is by no means a homogenous trip through drone soundscapes. Instead, this project seems to leaning towards Experimental Noise. The music heard here consists of both drones and samples that along with spoken parts in Italian and English create a mostly relaxed, dark atmosphere. It seldom gets really tense, yet the opening track presents some rather harsh and obtuse elements of needle-thin piercing noise and invoking spoken parts. The music takes great turns and may suddenly implode into a ample Dark Ambient piece only to once again explode unto a portion of Harsh Noise or perhaps another formula of suggesting ambient music. Because of this, I feel a bit lost after having heard this CD to be honest but it still is very atmospheric. The machine-gun poetry in the third track for example is very beautiful, so calmly read on such a violent backdrop. Playing on contrasts seems to be one of Acherontia Styx's trade. This Italian project surely is skilled in creating interesting Dark Ambient music. Yet sometimes, I miss a thread to follow throughout the album. I think this project could benefit from finding an own style instead of stitching together several others. For fans of Italian styled Dark Ambient. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One question to Acherontia Styx ECTONAUT: Please introduce your project to the Ortus Obscurum readers.
