ABSTRACT Q: Stains and Scribbles Release Year: 2001 Format: CD-R Tracklist: 1: Inner View 05:59 Total playingtime: 64:39 min General Facts: Abstract Q is the project of an Italian guy named Valerio Succa Paul. He has been an active musician since 1988 and Abstract Quadrant (which is the full name of this project) was born in 1996. Stains and Scribbles is the second release of Abstract Q and it is distributed by Staalplaat. Review: I contacted this musician after hearing his contribution on the 6th Staalplaat compilation. I was quire fond of the track named Sensory Organ that had ended up on this compilation and luckily I managed to convince Valerio to send me a promo-copy of Stains and Scribbles. Abstract Q performs a kind of electronic music which is full of effects and samples, yet it definitely has a song structure and a clear rhythm is present in all tracks. The tracks are instrumental besides a sampled female voice which appears in one track, and Valerio often adds clean melodies to the tracks. It reminds me a bit of late Muslimgauze without the Arabic elements but this was just a vague impression I got the first time I heard this CD. While listening to Stains and Scribbles, it feels like Valerio must have spent hour after hour perfecting every second to its fullest degree in these tracks. The sound is really crystal-clear and most of the effects used are quite high and easy to discover. In most cases, a too clear sound will ruin a track in my opinion but I don't think that it is the case here. When I visualise to this music, I see grinding needles and almost microscopic machines at work instead of the usual massive turbulence which is emanating from many of today's electronical releases. Everything is so smooth and clean on this CD, it is truly a skilful craftsmanship to make an electronical release with such a clean and perfected sound without ending up losing too much of the actual atmosphere. I especially enjoy listening to this CD through headphones. I am not that skilled in accounting for all these terms which are used to describe the working methods of electronic musicians but it seems that Valerio has been playing a lot with output effects. Sounds wander from the left to the right phone and various sounds release each other constantly; there is so much to listen to. Well, what else can I say really? I consider Stains and Scribbles to be a refreshing release by a musician who seems to know what he is doing. It will be interesting to hear the future evolution of this project. - Click here to contact Abstract Q |
